Pakistani Painter has been awarded MacArthur "Genius"
Fellow, one of the top awards in the world.

MACARTHUR GENIUS FELLOWSHIP
Shazia Sikander, a graduate of the Department of Fine Arts,
NCA and well known Pakistani painter has been named MacArthur
"Genius" Fellow, one of the top awards in the world.
She is among 25 fellows each receiving $500,000.
Trained as a miniaturist at the National College of Arts (NCA)
in Lahore, Pakistan, Shahzia Sikander received a B.F.A. (1992)
from NCA, and M.F.A. (1995) from the Rhode Island School of
Design. She was a fellow of the Glassell School of Art’s
Core Program in Houston (1995-1997) and an artist-in-residence
at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles (2005). Her
work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions at
such national and international venues as the Museum of Modern
Art, New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the
National Gallery of Canada, the Venice Biennale 2005, and the
Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris.
Principal NCA Prof. Sajida Haider Vandal said that this award
is the highest achievement ever received by a Pakistani Artist
and a matter of great honor for the country in general and for
NCA in particular. Professor Sajida further added that earlier
Dr. Ayesha Jalal, a member of NCA’s international faculty
in Graduate program in Cultural Studies was the first Pakistani
to get a five year MacAurthur award in 1998. She is a Professor
of History at Tufts University, USA and author of several books
including ‘Self Sovereignty’ and ‘The Sole
of Spokesman’.
