ABOUT NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ARTS

The Mayo School of Art was established along with Lahore Museum in 1875, to preserve crafts of Punjab under patronage of John Lockwood Kipling. In 1958 it was restructured as the National College of Arts and today NCA is the leading Arts institution not only offering degrees in multiple fields of architecture, design, fine arts, musicology, film and TV, interior design, but also cultivating the culture of freedom of creativity and expression. “…At the National College of Arts (NCA), we imagine a world. Not one world, but many. One for each of us, one from each of us, with these we write the autobiographies of our times, in objects, in lines, in mortar, and in perishable clay. In tracing ourselves, we leave traces. These are the traces that make our cities. Turn us inside out like pillowcases with that remembered smell, like shed skins. These are the traces that populate our nights, and from these traces we dare to dream again…” (Excerpts from NCA teacher-students conversations).

CONFERENCE

Pakistan’s first International Conference on Media and Film 2018
Conference theme: Negotiations and Encounters

The cinematic tradition and production of Lahore was positioned at the centre stage after partition of Sub-Continent in 1947, and thus emerged a new era which witnessed much struggles that was in constant negotiations with technology, state policies, audience shifts, and different types of regimes both progressive and authoritarian. Very little account of the era, since partition, has been articulated, and no account in the cinema studies in Pakistan has established that engages with socio-cultural formations. Today as part of global south, we are living the moment of a significant paradigm shift in the practices of media, new media, cinematic transitions and their encounters with content and technologies which require interrogation and understanding to fully grasp the challenges that we face in the Twenty-First century. The conference, envisions that the disciplines of the arts, humanities, media, anthropology and cultural studies can play an important role in tracing the genealogies of the past traditions, documenting the pivotal moments in the transition of the cinema from the silver screen experience to the digital age in home entertainment, and most importantly, what are the crucial roles these moving images are playing in contemporary popular cultural practices of Pakistan. It further seeks to explore the challenges we are facing today including, how to learn from historiographical accounts of the moving image, interrogate the expanding definitions of ‘media’, ‘new media’, and digital cultures, and most importantly what do we learn from these accounts about our present and future.

This international and interdisciplinary conference will invite a range of academics, media practitioners, independent researchers, artists and activists to explore the challenges that we face in the twenty-first century. How are we to negotiate our agency in creating future paths, and continue to explore new categories of moving images and digital media texts.

The conference will have three sessions. A typical panel will include 4 to 5 specialists to interrogate deeply the question and issues at hand. The first session will address the Cinema and Pakistan; second session will be about interrogating media and new media technologies; and the third session will be round table panel with 8-9 panellists who will present their work for five minutes each and then engage in a discussion that will also include attendees of the session.

It is also envisioned that invited media practitioners from Pakistan and abroad will engage on academic issues as well as the issues of:

• Interdisciplinary studies and the cinematic forms in the digital age;
• the idea of historicity in the reading of cinema in Pakistan;
• emergent forms of other media like video games, social networks, virtual reality;
• experimental film and artistic intervention with new media technologies;
• and lastly, moving images texts that transgress boundaries through form, content, gender, and class.
