Introduction
Founded as
the Mayo School of Art in 1875, the National College of Arts (NCA) is home
to a century old living tradition of art education. It was upgraded to the
present status of NCA in 1958 and is among those few public sector
institutions in
Pakistan
which have earned professional respect as well as international acclaim due
to its high standards of education. To further excellence and achievements
of the NCA, it was felt that adequate knowledge and research support in
Art, Architecture, Design and other disciplines of humanities, and social
sciences at the academic level have also to be instituted. The Research and
Publication Centre (RPC) culminates such thinking into academic action.
Established in 1999, the RPC is supported through a small
annual grant from the endowment Fund of NCA. Being a small publishing house
it aims at promoting distinction in education through research and
publishing. A Board of Advisors and a Research Review Committee comprising
leading academics, journalists and publishers of the country oversee the
quality of research done here at the RPC. The RPC has two main sections;
Research, Design and Publication Section. The Research Section has
initiated numerous research and documentation projects to map the art, architecture,
and design landscape of the country. Drawing on the NCA Archives, the RPC
is publishing a series of books on the art history of
Pakistan
.
The Design and Publication Section is responsible for the design, editing,
and production of high quality books and other publications at the NCA.
